Air Duct Cleaning FAQ — Los Angeles, CA

Common questions from homeowners in Los Angeles and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.

How often do ducts in a Los Angeles home actually need cleaning?

Three to five years covers most households here. The long dry season from May through October pushes fine grit into the system, and the basin inversion keeps particulates hanging around instead of blowing out to sea. Pets, recent remodeling, or anyone in the house with asthma pulls that interval shorter. If your last cleaning was before the last time you changed flooring, it's time.

Walk me through the job from the time you arrive.

We open the system, look at the supply runs, the returns, and the blower compartment, and tell you what we found before anything gets turned on. Then we seal the vents, hook a negative-air machine to the trunk line, and send rotating brushes and compressed-air whips down each branch so debris travels toward the vacuum instead of into your living room. Registers come off and get washed. We close with the return drops and the blower, put everything back, and walk the house with you.

What's a realistic time window for the work?

A standard single-family house with one system usually runs two to four hours. Bigger places with two furnaces, or 1945–1965 tract and ranch homes where duct runs were added on later and wander through tight crawlspaces, take longer. Dingbat and garden apartment units are often quicker because the runs are short. We give you a time estimate at the door, not after we're halfway in.

Why does the number come out different from house to house?

Vent count is the biggest driver, followed by how many separate systems feed the house. Access matters in Los Angeles. A 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival with ducts shoved into a low attic after a floor-furnace conversion takes more time per run than a newer infill build with designed-in ductwork. Flex duct that's crushed or sagging, heavy construction dust, or a blower that hasn't been opened in a decade all add labor. The estimate is free and we price it after we've actually looked, not over the phone.

Is my furniture getting shoved around, and what does the house look like after?

We work around furniture rather than relocating it. If a sofa or dresser sits flat against a floor register, we'll slide it a few inches and slide it back. Drop cloths go down under every register we pull, the vacuum runs under negative pressure the whole time so dust goes into the machine, and we wipe the grilles before they go back on the wall. You shouldn't be able to tell we were there except at the vents.

How do I know whether the problem is my dryer vent or my HVAC?

Look at where the symptom shows up. Clothes taking two cycles to dry, a hot laundry room, or lint around the dryer door is a dryer vent issue and has nothing to do with your furnace. Weak airflow at the bedroom registers, uneven temperatures between rooms, or dust reappearing on surfaces a day after you clean points at the HVAC ducts. We handle both, so if you're not sure, we'll check both while we're out.

Suppose you open a duct and find growth inside. Then what?

We stop and show you photos before we touch it. Surface growth on sheet metal can often be cleaned and treated with an EPA-registered antimicrobial. Growth soaked into the lining of flex duct can't be cleaned out, and that section gets replaced. If it looks like a moisture source is feeding it, usually a sweating coil, a bad drain pan, or condensation in an uninsulated attic run, we tell you to fix that first. Cleaning without it just buys a few months.

Does a fresh filter go in before you leave?

Yes, a standard-size filter is part of the service. Putting the old one back after cleaning makes no sense, since it's holding everything the system collected since the last change. We stock common sizes for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, and American Standard equipment. Odd-size or high-MERV media cabinets we'll order or tell you exactly what to buy.

Can someone come out today?

Often, yes. We keep slots open for same-day calls, and mornings tend to have more room than afternoons. Fall is the busy stretch, when Santa Ana winds come in from the east and push dust through every gap in the house, so same-day gets tighter then. Call early and we'll tell you honestly whether today works or whether tomorrow is the real answer.

Which parts of the area do you cover?

We work across Los Angeles and the coastal Southern California basin between the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountains and the Pacific. That takes in the Valley, the South Bay, and the older neighborhoods in between, from 1910s–20s Craftsman bungalows and 1920s–30s stucco duplexes to postwar ranch tracts, 1960s–80s garden apartments, and new ADUs. Marine layer mornings near the coast and inland heat on the east side mean systems in those areas get used differently, and we adjust for that. If you're not sure you're in range, call and ask.
